Joel Wästberg, better known as producer sir Was, has shared his latest record Holding On To A Dream. The Swedish musician offers a multifaceted project, drawing inspiration from classic soul to old school hip-hop and pop. Clocking in at about 45 minutes with 11, densely-crafted tracks, the overall theme of album lands on relationships and sir Was' personal experiences of them. He enlists only one guest feature, fellow Swedish artist Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon, for the duet "Deployed" where the two respond on the ups and downs of love, but the rest of the project is carried by the solo artist.
“I was interested in having a lusher sound, richer,” he writes on his Bandcamp page. “With the first record, I had this idea that I wanted it to sound like an old vinyl record. I wanted this lo-fi, old-school sound. When I realized that I was actually making another album, I felt a bit scared of the whole thing, but it didn’t take me that long to realize that the only thing I could do was to make something that felt really right in my body and soul. I’ve realized that there’s nothing to be afraid of. I’m ready to explore so much more.”
